Knee Muscle Strength and Bone Density

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between knee muscle strength and bone mineral density(BMD) of femoral neck in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women. A total of 324 healthy women(192 pre-menopausal women, 132 post-menopausal women) participated in the study. By using an isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex NORMTM), muscle strength tests were performed for knee muscles at 60 degrees/sec and 180 degrees/sec, and BMD measurements were obtained by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Statistical analysis showed significantly higher bone density and muscle power in pre-menopausal women than in post-menopausal women(p<0.001). After controlling for age, body weight and height, significant partial correlation coefficients were found between BMD of the femoral neck and knee muscle strength(with flexors: r=0.31, p<0.01; with extensors: r=0.33, p<0.01) in post-menopausal women, but not pre-menopausal women. The data suggest that the isokinetic strength of knee muscles may be contribute to the bone density of the proximal femur in post-menopausal women, but may not in the younger individuals.
